Utilization of PEARLS Debriefing Tool following a clinical event

Take Away Tidbits:

  1. The PEARLS framework helps a preceptor facilitate learning through reflection.
  2. This framework can be adapted for various clinical experiences.
  3. The PEARLS Healthcare Debriefing Tool expands on the analysis step and provides sample phrases for preceptors to use.

Summary:

Debriefing after a critical incident, use of a new skill, or a challenging encounter allows for reaction, a description of the event, subsequent analysis and summary. The debriefing process aims to facilitate a safe discussion to improve a learners clinical practice with a focus on improvement. This debrief aid is useful for preceptors as it integrates learner self assessment, encourages a focused discussion and provides feedback and/or teaching around an identified performance gap.

When utilizing the analysis phase of PEARLS, preceptors should pose the following questions:

  1. Is the performance gap clear?
  2. How much time is available?
  3. Do we have cognitive, technical or behavioural aspects to address?

The approach is synthesized in the following tool:
