Summary:
Debriefing after a critical incident, use of a new skill, or a challenging encounter allows for reaction, a description of the event, subsequent analysis and summary. The debriefing process aims to facilitate a safe discussion to improve a learners clinical practice with a focus on improvement. This debrief aid is useful for preceptors as it integrates learner self assessment, encourages a focused discussion and provides feedback and/or teaching around an identified performance gap.
When utilizing the analysis phase of PEARLS, preceptors should pose the following questions:
- Is the performance gap clear?
- How much time is available?
- Do we have cognitive, technical or behavioural aspects to address?
