Summary:
Generalism as a philosophy of care is integral to Family Medicine. The “6 Cs” concept provides a framework to help Family Medicine physician preceptors structure and discuss the nature of generalism. This one-page infographic provides practical examples that can be used to articulate the praxis of generalism in Family Medicine in the clinical setting with learners.
Take-Away Tidbits:
•During teaching, family physicians can be role models by enacting the “6 Cs”: comprehensive care, complexity, context, continuity of care, communication, and collaboration
•They can encourage open discussion with learners regarding the unique challenges and rewards of practising generalism, using their own experiences to highlight the “6 Cs”
•Involving residents in these discussions can be helpful for learners because residents are often experiencing similar challenges; these discussions can help reassure learners and encourage them to share their questions
