Residency Assessment

Summary

“It’s on the strength of observation and reflection that one finds a way.” – Claude Monet

Assessment in Family Medicine Residency training is guided by the CFPC model called CRAFT – Continuous Reflective Assessment for Training, which emphasizes regular, formative assessment in the workplace linked to regular summative assessment and performance reviews. Competency is assessed using Entrustable Professional Activities (EPAs), which are organized under Domains of Care. Each EPA is comprised of multiple competencies, following the CanMEDs-FM roles.

Take Away Tidbits

  • Assessment requires active partnership
  • Learning environment should support dialogue and reflection
  • Feedback should be timely, specific, and documented
  • Residents should know where they stand
  • System supports fairness for all residents and individual resident learning trajectories
